When does your survival become another’s oppression?
When does getting your needs met justify another’s regression?
When does obtaining a standard of living justify reducing another’s?
When does putting yourself first, permit disregarding the lives of your sisters and brothers?
Fear Of Missing Out seems to be a popular acronym,
FOMO is an explanation of why so many clamour in the din.
In a place of infinite abundance, resources seem remarkably short.
And all those desiring them, to gain them, will do anything as a last resort.
Compassion and consideration seem to be options weakening,
In favour of the ability to obtain the things you are seeking.
And when they dare to trespass on your frightened mind,
FOMO comes along to turn them in their tide.
We are the so-called intelligent species, the human race.
Despite an expensive planet, we are running out of habitable space.
And when we could work together, as a focused collective,
FOMO pushes in and divides, with personal objectives.
Are you scared of missing out, to another or completely?
If it is to another, then your future will appear bleakly.
If you think there is ‘not enough’ then there is something for us all to do,
For what you have FOMO for, will affect me and you.
So, if your FOMO is for a finite resource,
Then as a collective, on how to resolve it there should be intercourse.
For while now you may be in a position to obtain just what you need,
There is no future assurance of this, you may be overtaken by another’s greed.
Greed is really the element from which FOMO stems,
Believing you must get yours, no matter what this message sends.
If FOMO makes us all believe we must fight to be on top,
Then its insidious spiral will never come to a stop.
Only when society, then life is pushed to a grinding halt,
Will the few left standing have to deal with the result.
For when you have trodden on others to clamour to the highest rung,
You will realise your position is precarious and easily undone.
Survival of the fittest is an evolutionary theory,
It describes genetic replication not the oppression of the weary.
It refers to growth of a species as a fulfilled whole,
That collectively recognises and contributes to its role.
So while you may want to justify your behaviour as a reaction,
All you are justifying is humanities rapid retraction.
Any species that believes in exterminating the majority for the remaining sum,
Is not suffering from FOMO, rather a delusion to who has “won”.
If you believe in exerting your efforts, hour after hour,
So you can have more than others, then you have truly lost your power.
FOMO exploits the greed, the idea of caring for your neighbour kept in check.
And makes everyone believe in a competition where every stranger is an enemy unmet.
FOMO justifies oppression for those that didn’t get there first.
FOMO explains others regression - they didn’t have the drive or thirst.
FOMO allows a lower standard of living for others, why you fought to get first place.
FOMO rationalises putting yourself first, saying there is no saving grace.
So really what it does, is assists more than you know,
The fracturing of society in a way that’s not so slow.
As everyone priorities on the basis of FOMO,
No one recognises this is the quickest way for mankind to lose its flow.
If you had all you wanted, because there was no one to take from,
Then what would you be at the pinnacle of? A population of one.
And the FOMO would only haunt your memories of the old days.
When you lived alongside people with the same malaise.
So then reaching the top of the game, the pile or the world,
Has meant doing so on the back of the faceless, who to ruin have been hurled.
And the idea of doing this, was not of your own making,
It was planted by FOMO and its insidious undertaking.
